RENEWAL
Yes, it’s that time of year again to pay
your 2007 senior center dues, we’re happy to report that there will be
no increase in membership fees. Dues are $12.00 per person.
A membership form is included in this
newsletter; we ask that you fill out all the blanks on both sides of the
form. After you have
completed your membership form front and back either mail it or bring it
to the center.
Please make check payable to the City Of
Hilliard. If paying in cash, please have correct change.
If you are mailing in your membership,
please include a self-addressed stamped envelope so we may return your
membership card. No cards
will be mailed unless the self-addressed stamped envelope is included.

STATE TAILGATE PARTY

us for a tailgate party on Monday, January 8th to help cheer
the Buckeyes on to Victory for the National Championship!
We’ll
start at 11:30am with warm up games such as football toss and corn hole
followed by some good tailgate food like Brats and all the trimmings. Then
stay and play Buckeye Bingo at $1.00 per card. Please signup by Friday,
January 5.

You
can drop off your used or old greeting cards to be sent with
Missionary’s around the world. We will accept cards at the front desk
through January 31.

Being
able to draw and paint is a skill, which is well with in most people’s
reach. As children, we freely practiced drawing and painting unencumbered
with any of the feelings of failure, inadequacy or inhibitions which
usually tend to burden our artistic efforts as adults.
Learn
the mechanics of basic Art, Sketching, Charcoal, Watercolors etc. Bring
paper and two pencils, one hard lead and one soft lead.

WISE SENIORS COMPUTER CLASSES

These
classes are hands on.
Students receive a booklet for each two-part class.
Classes are limited to 12 students.
The
cost is $44.00 per session.

do not need to have stories like Hemingway, they just want to hear about
your childhood and what it was like growing up in your era. The
kids are very interested in learning about your heritage. Starting
Thursday, Jan 18 we will be visited by 5th graders from Horizon Elementary
School. Horizon will bring in 1 class per week(approx 25 children) to talk
in small groups with you each week. Please call the center to signup
876-0747 – If you signup we ask that you are able to attend all 4 weeks.

HOMESHARING
A
GREAT HOUSING OPTION
HomeSharing
a non-profit program serving Columbus and Franklin County since 1985, is a
great housing option for older adults; people with disabilities and single
adults of all ages. HomeSharing matches people who have space in their
homes with others who need affordable housing. Sometimes one sharer helps
the other with chores or errands and by doing so, greatly reduces housing
cost. All applicants are interviewed and have background checks.
HomeSharing is operated by Northwest Counseling Services. For more
information, please call HomeSharing at 221-4663.

once again have volunteers here to assist in preparing your taxes.
You may call the Center to
schedule your appointment in February.
GARAGE
SALE
Don’t be bored this winter, clean out your closets and basements.
We will be having a garage sale on Friday,
March 16th.
Start your spring-cleaning early!
We will begin accepting items March 12th. No clothes or shoes please.
WINTER

to the weather all
of the programs at the Center or away from the Center will be canceled.

and enjoy a hot meal at the Center Tuesday
through Thursday at noon. Please

the yellow tablet. Advanced reservations are required.
The cost of the lunch is $3.50 or you may purchase a meal ticket,
$20.00 for 6 meals.

There
is a wonderful library in the Center.
Besides books, we have audio books, large print books, videos,
puzzles and a wealth of senior information from housing to health
care.
COMPUTERS
There
are computers in the library available for your use along with a printer
and Internet connection.
MEDICAL
TRANSPORTATION
The
local Kiwanis organization offers a free transportation program for
trips to and from medical and dental appointments within Franklin County
for residents of the Hilliard School District. This service is provided
between the hours of 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. If you wish to use this service, please call the Center
to make arrangements at least 48 hours in advance.
INSURANCE
ASSISTANCE -- OSHIIP
Peggy
McDaniels, our OSHIIP representative, will answer questions regarding
Medicare, Medicare supplement, and long-term care insurance.
She will help you understand your medical statements. The
Ohio Department of Insurance can answer your questions 1-800-686-1578.
If
you need assistance, Peggy will be at the Center on Monday, January 22nd
from 2:30-4:00 PM. Call and
make an appointment.
COAAA
– ACCESS TO BENEFITS HOTLINE
The
COAAA Medicare team will respond to questions about Medicare to callers to
the helpline. The toll free number 1-800-648-1176 is answered from 8:00am
to 5:00pm and directed to expert staff. If no one is available, the call
will be returned the next business day.

PASS
School
passes for free admission to school sporting events may be obtained
at the Center.
You must be 55 years of age, a resident of the school
district, and a member of the Center.
If you are not a member of the Center you must be 62 years of
age.
The passes are good at all schools.
There are some exceptions such as playoff games, spring
musical etc.
VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED
Volunteers
are occasionally needed to assist in the preparation of lunch.
Please call the Center at 876-0747, if you are able to help.
SERVICE CIRCLE
Join
this group of volunteers as they host a birthday party for the residents
of the Arbors Care Center on Wednesday,
January 17 at 3:00 PM.
If you would like to help any month with this program by
entertaining or serving cake and ice cream, please let us know.
Thank-You Carolers for entertaining in December.

knit and crochet hats, booties and afghans for babies, we make chemo
hats and slippers for cancer patients, adults as well as children.
Please join us on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of every month.

SENIORS
IN THE SCHOOLS
This
is a program that uses Senior Citizens to assist teachers in the
elementary schools. Nancy
Garrett is our chairperson for this program.
If you would like to volunteer, call Nancy on her cell phone at

& WELLNESS PROGRAMS

WALK-IN WELLNESS CLINIC
Jane
Van Fossen, the Health Nurse from the Franklin County Board of Health
will be at the Center on Thursday, January 18th 10:00AM-Noon.
You can have your blood pressure checked, a glucose check (blood
sugar), your weight monitored and questions answered regarding health
and medications.
CHOLESTEROL
CHECK January 18th
The
health nurse does cholesterol checks by appointment on the third
Thursday of every month.
You must fast for the 12 hours before the test.
You may take your medicines with a minimal amount of water.
The cost is $20.00. You
must call the Center to schedule an appointment for the test.
MANICURES
& PEDICURES
A
pedicure is $25.00 and a manicure is $18.00.
Call the Center at 876-0747 to schedule an appointment.
If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call the
Center to cancel as we usually have a waiting list.

HEALTH AND FITNESS CLASSES
Come
and check out any of our health and fitness classes the first time for free! (Except bowling and golf)
CLASS
ACTIVITY CARD
This
card is offered to those taking part in health and wellness classes.
The cost of the card is $15.00 for eight classes.

CHI FOR ARTHRITIS
Advanced
Class--Mondays at 9:15 AM

Come
give Tai Chi a try! Tai Chi is gentle exercise that incorporates meditation
and movement that will increase your strength, flexibility, balance and
overall level of fitness.
This
class will be taught by video. There
is no charge to attend.
GET FIT
This
exercise program takes place on Tuesday
and Friday mornings at 9:15 AM. This is a complete full body workout.
Free weights are used. The cost is $2.00 or you may use an activity card.
LINE
DANCE
Line
dancing is a great way to exercise and have fun!
The cost of the class is $2.00 or an activity card.
Tuesdays 1:15 PM.
There
will be no class on January 2nd or January 8th.
INDOOR
WALKING
Indoor
walking is available in the Community Center Monday
through Friday from 8:00 to 9:00 AM and from 1:00 to 2:00 PM.
No fee.
WATER
AEROBICS
Water
Aerobics classes are held at Staybridge Suites in Dublin.
The
class fee is $2.00 or you may use an activity card.
The intermediate class is a low impact class with moderate
intensity. The advanced class is vigorous exercise and you must be able
to swim and work with weights. The
arthritis class is a workout certified by the Arthritis Foundation.
Everyone must sign a release waiver form to take part in class.

Cam
II fitness equipment and motorized treadmills are available at the
Community Center. There is
a monthly fee of $5.00 payable to the Community Center.
You must have a guided orientation on the use of this equipment
($2.00). Call the Community
Center at 876-5200 to schedule an orientation.
BASKETBALL
Monday through Friday from 2:00 to 2:30 PM
– No charge if you would like to shoot some hoops.
You
will be sharing the gym with the walkers.
No fee.
BOWLING
Meet
at Sawmill Lanes on the corner of Sawmill and Bethel Road.
